In the last few days, I’ve had more than a few athletes come up to me and ask, “Does Nitric Oxide even work?” then, before I answer, I get, “Should I take it?”
So to clarify, we are talking about boosting your body’s nitric oxide levels using precursors found in beets (aka Sur Alt Red) in one case.
Now for the questions:
Q: What does boosting my Nitric Oxide do?
A: It is a vasodilator, which dilates your arteries, so more oxygen-rich red blood flows to your hard-working legs. More oxygen means you can delay going anaerobic during strenuous efforts.
Q: How many pills is it?
A: Checkout Sur AltRed is just one pill and works just as well but fades faster.
Q: When do I take it?
A: You can take it one hour before your workout and notice the effect. The ideal protocol would be to take two capsules every morning and then 4 to 6 one hour before your more demanding workouts.
Q: How is it different than Beta Alanine?
A: Think of Nitric Oxide helping you first and Beta Alanine kicking in later. Boosting your nitric oxide provides more oxygen, so you don’t build up lactate acid. Once you start building up lactic acid, Beta Alanine produces carnosine that helps buffer the lactic acid produced.
P.S. if you notice your lips tingling that is due to more blood flow in your lips and a good sign that you now have elevated levels of nitric oxide.
