Ready for a high-carb drink showdown? Which is the best high-carb fueling option Skratch Labs SuperFuel and Maurten 320 Drink Mix.
They both deliver 80g+ of carbs per bottle and put you well into the high-carb fueling zone. What’s the scoop on each of these fuels?
Skratch Lab’s Superfuel is one of the most functional high-carb drinks out there. The powder blends way better than most other endurance drinks. This mix packs 400 calories, 100g of carbs, and 400mg of sodium in a serving.
For a high-carb fuel, it’s incredibly light and drinkable, more like the consistency of water. Plus it has light flavoring.
While it dissolves well, at 7 scoops of powder per bottle, I sometimes wonder if there is going to be enough room for water.
Skratch claims that it digests steadily like real food does using its advanced carbohydrate known as Cluster Dextrin™. They say that “you get a steady release of energy without the risk of gastrointestinal distress”.
One of the most innovative sports drinks on the market is Maurten 320 Drink Mix, which inspired this whole new generation of high-carb fueling.
Maurten delivers a full 80g of carbs per bottle with the promise that it won’t make you sick to your stomach as a result of their “Hydrogel” technology.
This drink has been fueling some of the most successful marathoners in the world and the wins they have at this point are hard to count.
Maurten 320 packs 320 calories, 80g of carbs, and 500 mg of sodium in a serving. Maurten doesn’t believe in adding anything additional to their products that don’t enhance performance, so they don’t add any flavors and the taste is just “slightly sweet”.
The drink instantly converts to a “gel” form in the acidity of the stomach, encapsulating the carbohydrates and mimicking a gel consistency. The hydrogel then enables a smooth transportation of the drink through the stomach to the intestine where the water, salt, and carbohydrates are absorbed.
The only downside is mixing. You really want to shake it for a minute or two to make sure it dissolves and doesn’t settle at the bottom of your bottle.
What do we think?
It really comes down to taste and the consistency you prefer.
Maurten is sweet-tasting and has a smooth, yet slightly thicker consistency. You must mix it appropriately or it can impact how it functions. It comes in nifty little sachets so you don’t have to do any scoop counting.
Superfuel brings more flavor and a lighter consistency which I liked. It comes in Lemon Lime and Raspberry flavors. While they offer Superfuel in big bags, the 7-scoop serving takes a little more diligence to prepare.
Both will deliver on the performance with 80g for Maurten and 100g of carbs for Skratch Superfuel.
Two IMPORTANT PRO Tips:
Maurten: Do NOT mix this with more than 500ml of water. If you do the Hydrogel won’t form correctly.
If you have a larger bottle, I suggest you mix 1L with two sachets or 1.5L with 3 sachets. Stir in a larger container to make sure it fully dissolves then pour it into your bottles or hydration pack.
Skratch Superfuel: Did you know you can mix this with Skratch Hydration?
If you love Skratch Sport Hydration, match the flavors Lemon Lime and Raspberry of Hydration and Superfuel, and you can put in any number of scoops of Superfuel to increase the carbs of the hydration you already love.
I find that adding 3.5 scoops of SuperFuel is ideal and boost the carbs by 50g. Taking you to a total of 70g of carbs and 580mg of sodium.
Happy carb loading
