One of the most common questions I get is “which bar to use during my workout”. There are lots of bars that are great before and after, but the during workout bar is a special category.
What I look for in a “during” workout bar is energy (carbs), that’s easy to swallow without getting stuck in the back of my throat.
Today we are facing off Betty Lou’s bars and Maurten’s new Solid. Which is better?
Meet Betty Lou:
The bar’s slogan is “like a piece of pie,” and I can attest this is what I think of when enjoying one.
Why do athletes love them so much?
Here is my best guess. First, they are NOT dry, so they are easy to eat, and the taste is excellent with a natural fruit filling. But the biggest reason is that people probably feel better after eating them due to the lack of refined sugars and they are gluten-free.
Eating half a bar and putting it in your pocket is almost impossible to save for later. They are too good. I’ll also say that Betty Lou’s has one of the highest repeat purchase rates of any bar product. Once people try it, they come back for more!
They’re also amazing workout fuel with 42g of energy-packed carbs and tasty flavors like Blackberry, Cinnamon Apple, and PB & J.
Betty Lou’s are made with non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan ingredients and are sweetened with natural sweeteners such as honey and fruit juice concentrate.
But what about Maurten Solid?
Think of Maurten’s latest product, SOLID, as the serious, no-frills, all-buff boyfriend of Betty Lou. While Betty Lou is carefree and bursting with delicious flavors, Maurten Solid is a high-performance fuel option with 225 calories and 44g of easily digestible carbs.
There are two flavors, BASIC, which is well, a basic oat bar flavor that is pleasantly sweet but purposely plain tasting. The other is C which stands for cocoa and offers a tasty alternative to mix things up.
Here is the real secret.
With 44g of carbs, this offers athletes the perfect high-carb fueling strategy and can also be used as a great pre-workout fuel when you want something “light” but robust enough for that 60-90 minute session.
What I like about Maurten Solid during my workout is how easy it is to eat. While Betty Lou’s is pretty easy the pie exterior can always use a sip of water to get down smoothly. That is not an issue with the Maurten Bar where I’ve been able to eat it sans water with no issue.
Final Word:
You are in for a great workout when you have both Betty Lou and Maurten Solid around. Maurten SOLID is built for performance fueling and can be incorporated easily into your high-carb strategy. Betty Lou’s is all about fun and fuel and is bursting with flavor.
