The most common question I get from athletes is, “how can I get fitter faster?”

There are no shortcuts to putting in the time to train, but what if you could get a little more improvement out of every training session?

I’m excited to share the best performance hack I have come across for athletes to become fitter faster. In this two-part series, I’ll share how it works.

First, a quick refresher on the basics of training. You apply a physical strain to our body, recover from that strain, and then our bodies adapt to the higher workout and, as a result, get fitter.

Here, the key is “apply a hard strain” and “recover from that strain.”

Part 1: How to push harder in each workout (the easy way)

The problem with applying a hard strain in training is that it hurts. When we push hard, we run out of oxygen going to our working muscles, lactic acid is generated faster than we can clear it, pain increases, and we eventually slow down.

But if you could increase the amount of oxygen-rich blood flowing to your working muscles, you could slightly delay that feeling of having to slow down. As a result, you could tolerate a somewhat higher workload for longer.

The “hack” part of this is that you can supplement before your workout to boost Nitric Oxide. When your Nitric Oxide levels increase, your arteries dilate, and more oxygen-rich red blood cells flow to your working muscles.

The results can be subtle to dramatic. On a moderate run, I didn’t notice the benefit as much. The other day I did intervals up a set of stairs with my daughter and saw a relatively significant difference in these high-intensity efforts.

So how do you boost your Nitric Oxide levels?

There are two ways:

Beet-based products like SurAlt Red are very effective at boosting Nitric Oxide for up to two hours.
SwissRX Nitric Oxide uses an ingredient initially discovered in watermelon to boost Nitric Oxide for 5 hours.

I generally use the SwissRX Nitric Oxide product as I’m looking for a longer-lasting benefit. The advantage of the Sur AltRed product is that it is just one tiny pill and is excellent for shorter workouts.

Here is how to add it to your daily routine.

Take two capsules each morning. Dr. Kevin Sprouse has many of his patients do this for general cardiovascular health, plus it helps build up reserves that make it more effective during your training.
Take six capsules 45 minutes before training. You could experiment with higher amounts. Six capsules are the recommended dosage. You have reached the ideal dosage if you feel your lips slightly tingling.

The combination of Nitric Oxide before your workout and a Total Recovery Shake after your training work hand-in-hand to help you become fitter faster.

Stay tuned for part two tomorrow on recovery from your higher strain workouts.
